Food Journal 2-1-19: The Journey Begins

I started cooking a few years ago to be a help to my wife, Laura. She is an amazing cook and baker. I will never divorce her or do anything to cause her to divorce me. The food she makes is so good that I realized I needed to start cooking, too.

That may sound odd but I didn’t want her to start hating cooking because she had to come home after work and then make stuff to eat. When you love doing something but have to do it every day with no help resentment can build. Since this is already my second marriage and it wasn’t my idea to end the first one I was looking for ways to make this marriage last forever.

I decided helping my wife in the kitchen was worth a try. I started with simple things. Things I could do in the slow cooker. Chili, soups, etc. I still love slow cookers. we have five of them. There is nothing better than pulling into the garage and smelling something inside the house cooking in the slow cooker. Maybe there are a few things better than that, but it is still very good.

I gradually got interested in making more things, even baking. We usually make a menu for the week together, we often cook together, either with each of us making different dishes or parts of the meal or both working on different parts of the same, usually more complicated, meal.

We are crazy obsessed with food. We grow it, we process it (freeze, dehydrate and can), we cook/prepare it, we eat it, we read about it, we watch television shows about it, we talk about it, we think about it, and we plan around it! We don’t think it is a problem, though. We are happy – and boy are we eating good!

We grow a lot of vegetables, fruits and herbs and we can taste the difference fresh ingredients make. We also love to preserve what we grow so it doesn’t go to waste because every year we grow a greater variety of things, and more of almost everything.

When it comes to cooking and baking we love making things from scratch, where possible, and we are always growing our list of things we no longer buy, but only make ourselves. We have so many cookbooks that it is ridiculous, especially with the internet, but we love trying new recipes, and changing them around a little bit to see what happens.
